Take THAT!

SPAR WITH YOUR SPOUSE WII BOXING EVENT
Sat. Sept. 25, 7:30 -

Fall begins with a bang this weekend at the Heritage Harbor Marina. The Spar your Spouse Wii boxing event will be held at Crawdad's this Saturday night. Our last Wii event was a HUGE success so be sure to sign up yourself and your partner early.

The kids will have their own Wii challenge separate from the Crawdad's event away from the bar so the adults can really have fun.
How many times have you really wanted to just let your partner have it???   Well here is your chance. Pick you character and go at it.. I promise you will have a BLAST!

In preparation for the big event here are a few tips:

    * Jabs are your bread and butter. Thrust either the Wii controller or nunchuck forward to jab. Do the same motion with a slight upward angle to jab to the face. Use jabs to throw one-two combination where you jab with the left hand and jab harder with the right.

    * Hit your opponent with uppercuts to do a lot of damage. Uppercuts are fairly hard to land and can be unreliable, but perfecting the uppercut will help you finish off big combos and lay your opponent out.

Just imagine how much fun it will be, so practice your jabs and upper cuts and get ready for the big Wii challenge this Saturday night.
It promises to be a BIG HIT!

If Fall had a Happy Place....This Would Be IT!!!

Fall always makes me think of Tanner's Orchard in Speer, Il. This family run orchard is the most amazing day trip you will ever make. The pick your own pumkins, the amazing fresh apple cider, and not to mention the Scrumptious , Delicious, OMG Fantastic Carmel Apples.....   YUM!... does not even describe the terrific produce and homemade bakery items such as fresh apple cider donuts and fudge that you can get when you take a trip to Tanner's....

Ok  so if you are on a diet....don't go  you will only end up hating yourself, because you will have no self control....I'm just sayin!

As a resident of Starved Rock Country I can attest to the awsomeness of Tanner's Orchard. Bring the kids and spend the day. They have hay rides, pick your own apples and pumpkins, pony rides, a corn maze, a great eatery where you can enjoy a wonderful lunch...This place is amazing and it's just over an hour from Heritage Harbor Marina so it's easy to make a trip to tanners a part of your weekend , but be forewarned...once you go, it will become an annual tradition.

A trip to Tanner's Orchard is defiantly a part of my Adventure Lifestyle!

It was a Classic Adventure!

Raw horse power, shinny chrome and loud engines.... Now that's what we call a SWEET Saturday Night !

Streator's Roamer Cruise Night was the undisputed king of things to do this past weekend. ( September 4,2011).Over  20,000 people attended the annual event in downtown Streator from as far away as Texas.

Everything from the classic Ford Model T, to the crowd favorite , a flame-throwing exposition by the Voodoo Kings Car Club of Chicago.

The scene of classic cars, roaring motors and rockabilly bands is what draws a huge crowd annually to a tiny town in the midst of Starved Rock Country. It's a great date night, even if you bring the kids... they get so caught up in the cars and hubby and you can reminisce about your classic ride that you had way back when...

What's the draw? The cars, sure, but anyone can have a car show. In Streator, the real attraction is the cruising: getting those vintage vehicles out on the road, slowly going up and down the main streets, listening to classic music and restoring — if only for one night — some magic memories of the past.

It's a stroll down memory lane for some, and for others it's a night of sheer envy. Awesome cars, and tricked out classics... every teenage boys dream... even the big kids, and when I say big kids I mean grown adult men... were droolin'.. " How cool is that"

It is the largest car show in downstate Illinois and it's here in the heart of Starved Rock Country.

If you missed it, you're in luck... because it's an annual event so mark you calendar now for a trip back in time!

Photos of Me...

Life is this funny thing that we plan for. We have dreams, hopes and goals, but when it comes down to it . Life is what you make of it!

If you try  remember that at the end of it all . .. the important things are the people in your life, the memories that you have shared, and the love of friends and family.  You will come to understand and strive to live a life that gives you all the things that are really important.

Ask yourself..."When I wake up in the morning, am I happy with my memories, do I spend time doing the things I like with the people who are important to me?"... What is missing?"

If you decide that life is worth living to its fullest, not matter what, maybe you should live it where those goals can be accomplished.

Because at the end of the day... we have  photos in an album , and stories that we share !!

 Do you have enough???

"Rubber Ducky... You're the One!"

Ducky Derbies are becoming a fun thing to do when you need to raise money for a charity and you couldn't ask for a  better place to do it than at Heritage Harbor Marina in Ottawa, Il.

This Sunday ( September 5, 2010) as part of the long holiday weekend Heritage Harbor Marina  along with Marquette Academy will be hosting it's third annual charity Ducky Derby. Hundreds of ducks will be making their way around the harbor.

What could be better than  happy little rubber duckies being dumped into the harbor and sent on the merry little way. Who ever " adopts" the fastest ducky wins. But even the slowest ducky get something... the duck that paddles the slowest and comes in last wins $100.00 How cool is that!

The holiday weekend signals the end of summer and the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season... or so it seems. This years event will be full of crafters and local vendors showcasing their best  merchandise and homemade crafts to either give as gifts or to decorate your home.

Not that I even want to think about it, but it's coming so why not get prepared early. Decorations, gifts, and cool things for yourself...  isn't that the best part of shopping !!

So be adventurous this weekend and take a drive to see the duckies dive in and I bet you will float away with some great items, and a good feeling.

Food... Is it wrong to love it?

There is a local restaurant in  Starved Rock Country  that serves food that is very different from the regular Midwestern food that we are used to.

Cajun food is not what one thinks about when you are in Illinois. You think hamburgers,  pizza, ...yeah defiantly  Pizza , but Cajun...nope that is not what pops into my head when you are thinking about what to eat for dinner.

However, Cajun Connection just outside Utica, IL, is this little place that when you drive past doesn't look like much , but the food is AMAZING! Alligator, jambalaya, etouffee’, or jumbo shrimp,  fried corn, and so much more.

Some of the dishes are served with Vodoo sauce... first off I want to know what it is and what can it do???
Because that just sounds awesome.

Getting a drink with dinner is just a part of life so  make sure to order a Turbo Dog  then stick around for desert because any restaurant that serves AMAZING bread pudding with sauce deserved a stop regardless of whether you eat anything else... but you will .. PROMISE

The local reviewer / concierge  service  called "Honey Let's Eat" gives this place great reviews.

So the next time you are in Starved Rock Country. Stop by the little pink house outside Utica, Illinois and get yourself some gator... you will be glad you did.

How Cool is Mother Nature!

It is amazing how many things there are to do right in your own back yard that you were never away of.

Free things which makes them even better!

3 State Parks...

Starved Rock State Park... listed as one of Illinois 7 wonders of the state. Beautiful trails that are open all year to hike, complete with wildlife...and I don't mean your kids...18 Canyons, picturesque waterfalls, and 2,630 acres of lush forests that includes over 200 different wildflowers. How awesome is that.

Matthiessen State Park...
Where you can expect to see beautiful rock formations in addition to unusual and abundant vegetation and wildlife. The Park was originally referred to as “Deer Park,” in reference to the large deer population.

Buffalo Rock State Park...
Located on a bluff which was once an island in the Illinois River. This 298 acre park is the home of two American bison. That is not something you see everyday now is it?

The parks are all free and so is parking. So grab the kids and the picnic basket and make a day of it... don't forget the camera!

You can get great pictures and how cool would it be to spend the day together doing something that doesn't require a cell signal (even though there is one)and or an outlet.

Unplug the kids, turn off the TV ... and go spend sometime doing something different this weekend.

Wii that was FUN!

Who would have ever thought that combining a large group of strangers in a pub with a Wii bowling game could be so much fun!

Last Saturday night (August 21, 2010) Crawdad's Bar & Grill in combination with Heritage Harbor Ottawa hosted their second annual Wii bowling tournament.

With a blind draw for teams it encouraged the 36 adults who participated to mingle and get to know new people.

Their were prizes and one's pride on the line! Somehow cash and bragging rights apparently brings out one's competitive spirit... who knew!

Being a family friendly resort Heritage Harbor also has a Wii tournament for the kids who wanted to participate as well; however their beer frame consisted of soda.

The whole event was so much fun that maybe the next time Crawdad's can "Rock Out" with a Guitar Hero night... Now that would be a blast!

What is the Adventure Lifestyle ?

An Adventure Lifestyle is an active lifestyle.

When you think about being adventurous what comes to mind? Is it simply trying new activities or going new places. How about trying different things to eat or getting to meet new people. Life is full of possibilities but unless you take a chance and dare to try new things you will not be able to enjoy life to its fullest.

So what defines your adventure lifestyle?
Do you look forward to trying an exciting or an unusual experience, or do you what to participate in an exciting undertaking.

Skydiving, boating, hiking, wakeboarding, glassblowing, taking a class or two, shopping, or enjoy all the gifts that Mother Nature has provided in Starved Rock Country.

When you think about living life to the fullest, do you have a plan?

Make a list of all the adventures you want to take and the memories you want to make, then come to a place where you are close enough to enjoy the benefits of the city but far enough away to enjoy a different type of life.

Take an adventure... But make it your adventure!

The Adventure Lifestyle awaits in the heart of Starved Rock Country at Heritage Harbor Ottawa.

Life on the Illinois River

The Illinois River is not only a working river, but a wonderful place to play, offering more than you might think.

The waterway is heavily used by barges' transporting bulk goods, but it is also a wonderful recreation area. The beautiful shoreline, sand beaches, rock cliffs (including Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock State Parks), hideaways and multiple food & beverage destinations.

Several species of migrating waterfowl and other wildlife make their home in the wetland and forest habitats along its banks.

Wakeboarding comes to Starved Rock Country

While at Heritage Harbor Ottawa you are only minutes away from any number of different types of sports, events, and festivals,
The sport of wakeboarding is growing in popularity and Heritage Harbor Ottawa along with the Illinois River are perfect for living your next great adventure.

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing techniques. Wakeboarding is more than simply staying up and riding on the surface. Riders eventually learn to use edging techniques, learning to move outside of the wake or cut rapidly in toward the wake. Jumps are performed by hitting the wake and launching into the air.

Wakeboard Chicago has partnered with Skydive Chicago to provide a place for those who seek an adrenaline rush like no other. Located on the private sports resort at Skydive Chicago, Wakeboard Chicago has the perfect combination skilled instruction and a comfortable feel that you won’t find anywhere else. Professional instructors give each student individual attention and teach at the level of the student. On land instruction is especially helpful to those who have never tried this sport. Wakeboarding can take more than a few attempts to get the hang of and that is why safe, professional, skilled instruction is so important.

Wakeboard Chicago is a safe, fun introduction to the sport of wakeboarding for anyone age 10 and over. Lessons include training, equipment, and launches from a private dock.

Call for a one on one instruction or set up a group outing. Whether you are just learning the sport or just want to improve Wakeboard Chicago can provide the ride of your life.

Wakeboarding is a great Adventure Lifestyle sport for those who like the adrenaline rush. The feel of being pulled behind a boat, speeding down the river, with your legs strapped to a board is not for the faint of heart.
But once you try it, you’re hooked!

Walt Willey

What does it say about a community that becomes such an important part of who you are that when you make it “Big” you always find a reason to come back?

Ottawa native Walt Willey made a return appearance to Ottawa’s Riverfest Celebration July 23-25, staring in a production of Arsenic and Old Lace at the Ottawa High School Auditorium.

Community Theater is one of Walt’s passions and having one in his home town is a project that Walt has been working on for some time now.

Although Walt is best known for playing Jackson Montgomery on the soap opera All My Children, a role he originated in 1987. There are many different aspects to the Ottawa native. His stand up comedy routine is very different from the character he plays on the daytime drama, has been performed locally, and hopefully will be again sometime soon.

Additionally Walt is very involved with both local and national charity organizations and has created the WilleyWorld Endowment Fund which gifts children’s charities and services.

During the 2010 Riverfest performance of Arsenic and Old Lace the Ottawa Native has chosen to Call Heritage Harbor Ottawa his home away from home.

With the picturesque view of the water, the adventures available just outside the door, and the beautiful homes, who wouldn’t want to call Heritage Harbor Ottawa your own home port?

Coming home to Starved Rock Country is always something to look forward to.

Wakeboarding?

River Games 2010 was a great day on the water. With temperature in the high 90’s the Illinois River was the place to be.

Free wakeboarding pulls were the event of the day and the professionals gave instructions to those who were willing to give the sport of wakeboarding a try.

Never heard of wakeboarding?

Well, wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing techniques.

On land instruction was helpful to those who have never tried it but didn’t always end up with the desired result. This sport can take more than a few attempts to get the hang of.
One first timer had to give it several attempts before he was able to ride the water.

Heritage Harbor Ottawa and Quest Watersports partnered for this annual event and it was a big hit with all who attended.

Wakeboarding is a great Adventure Lifestyle sport for those who like the adrenaline rush. The feel of being pulled behind a boat, speeding down the river, with your legs strapped to a board is not for the faint of heart. But once you try it, you’re hooked!

Happy Birthday America

The holiday weekend was amazing at Heritage Harbor Marina.

The marina was buzzing with activity early Friday as everyone headed in for the long holiday weekend. The weather was perfect Friday night for a nice cruise along the river then dinner at Crawdad’s.

Saturday’s sunshine allowed for the kids to enjoy the family fun games; the water balloon toss was a big hit, and laughter could be heard throughout the Marina as the kids participated in the potato sack races. A good time was had by all.

For those who sought a different type of water experience the hot sun made it the perfect time for a dip in the pool.

The Illinois River was the ultimate place to watch several of the area fireworks displays both Saturday and Sunday nights. There is no better seat in the house than the one from your boat to watch fireworks that are set off on the river.

River Games 2010

River Games 2010 is confirmed for JULY 16-18, 2010.

After a hugely successful inaugural event in 2009, River Games Returns to Heritage Harbor Ottawa! Co-sponsored by www.all-actionsports.com, Quest Watersports and Chicago MasterCraft, participants are expected to number in the hundreds again – out for free pulls behind MasterCraft boats, camping, food, fun, and an end-of-day “Air and Water” show.

The die-hards arrive Friday evening and either camp on site at Heritage Harbor, stay in the marina on their boats, or live it up aboard a luxury cruiser via Heritage Harbor’s “Boat and Breakfast” program. Ski, wake and surf coaching and pulls are the main activity through the afternoon on Saturday – along with great food & beverages provided by Crawdad’s Bar & Grill.
The day’s activities are launched from a floating platform anchored off Heritage Harbor’s east peninsula, which supports a constant flow of participants cycling onto several MasterCraft boats underway throughout the day. The backdrop is a gorgeous, unspoiled stretch of the Illinois Waterway bounded by trees and stone cliffs.

Riders young and old as groups and families enjoy this fantastic event – whether a first timer, new to the sports or seasoned vets looking to push the envelope just a bit more. A live radio remote, local news film crew and a few photographers are expected to be on hand to document the event again this year for general press and sport specific outlets.

Saturday afternoon's emceed show will start with a skydive exhibition courtesy of www.skydivechicago.com and closes with some serious double-ups, and included shoreline passes by the regions best athletes showing everything in between, from barefoot tricks to wake surfing. After, a DJ’d gathering campfire side and at Crawdad’s for the overnighters who stick around for more great weather on Sunday.

A Greener Lifestyle

It doesn’t get much Greener than Ottawa's Old Town Farmers Market!

As part of a healthier active lifestyle, Ottawa’s Old Town Farmers Market is a local favorite. The farmer’s market is a tradition in Starved Rock Country as an important part of the agricultural heritage of the community; they are also a great source of sustainably grown food. The food is fresher than most anything in the supermarket and that means it is tastier and more nutritious.
Locally grown produce and goods are sold directly to the consumer at a Farmers Market; therefore, it saves fossil fuels making it a greener alternative. Ottawa’s Old Town Farmers Market is also a good way for our visitors to sample local foods and learn about our local community.
Ottawa's Old Town Farmers Market is a wonderful place to purchase freshly grown vegetables, home baked goods, jams and jellies, dog treats, and even hand made crafts. So why not make the Ottawa’s Old Town Farmers Market a part of your weekend at Heritage Harbor. You can dock your boat or park the car near downtown Ottawa and go explore the many things offered in this amazing community.

Getting Married

Did you know that today weddings are more than just a singular event?

First, there is the engagement party to celebrate and share the big news. It is a great way for your families and friends to get to know each other. For those with especially long engagements, engagement parties are held one to three months after the engagement, and/or about a year before the big day.

Then its on to the bridal shower which can either be just for the bride and her quests or it can be a couple’s event held usually 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding.

The bachelor and bachelorette parties are becoming more of a coordinated event than the traditional rowdy party. These parties can be either separate or together depending on the couple’s tastes.

There’s the rehearsal dinner which is held usually the night before the wedding and includes the wedding party and special guests.

The big day has finally arrived and when it comes to the wedding itself depending on the family size, age of the couple, and their wishes it can be either a large formal event or an intimate private occasion in a special location
Now, if you thought that was it and then on to the honeymoon you would be right except for the post-wedding brunch which is for the couple's families and any wedding guests that are still around or in town. It's a winding-down party, when the newly married bride and groom get to say a final thank-you to their guests and spend a little more time with loved ones.

With everything you have to plan and do, finding the perfect place for each event can be very stressful, but not at Heritage Harbor Ottawa.

Harbor Lights is a beautiful setting for most any occasion. Whether it is a private, engagement party, the post wedding brunch, or the bridal shower Harbor Lights can seat 56 people on the main level. The upper level can be used for dancing, socializing, and it’s the perfect setting for breathtaking pictures that you will cherish for a lifetime.
Even intimate weddings can take place at Heritage Harbor.

If you want to have an event that people will always remember, you should start by having it at a place people will never forget. Heritage Harbor Marina & Harbor Lights!

A Weekend on the Water

The weather looks good for a weekend on the water.
It's only Tuesday, but I am ready for the weekend! Calling the friends, making the plans, and looking forward to getting the kids to "unplug" for a while. Instead of communicating via text or on Facebook I thought we might try some actual face time.

Boating on the river, hiking at Starved Rock State Park, dinner at Crawdad's and all without the hand held video games I cant seem to pry out of my children's hands. Ahhh Bliss!

Can't Wait !!!!
Anyone up for an adventure???? Come to Heritage Harbor Ottawa this weekend and enjoy an Adventure Lifestyle
